We started asking our members to nominate people for Member of the Month earlier this year. Nobody has had a more consistent stream of nominations than Jess! She’s working hard and everyone can see it! She is never deterred by a challenging movement, in fact, I think she works harder when she needs to improve a movement. It’s been so fun to watch her work ethic pay off and these more complicated movements become fluid. We can’t WAIT to see where she’s at in another year!Â
1. Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit because I wanted to try something new that would really challenge me more physically, I wasn’t expecting the mental challenge as well. I was ready to step out of my comfort zone and push myself in a different way. At the same time, I liked the idea of not having to figure it all out on my own. I wanted structure, guidance, and someone to tell me what moves to do, how to do them correctly, and when to push harder. CrossFit gave me that mix of intensity and direction I was looking for.I would also be remiss if I did not give my husband, Frank a shoutout here because he really knew I needed a change and suggested CrossFit and he could not have been more right.Â
2. What advice would you give yourself before starting CrossFit?
I would say because I was doing Beachbody and other at home training apps I was familiar with a lot of different types of workouts, but CrossFit is different so I would tell myself not to expect to jump in and be able to know how to do everything right away, especially the complex moves. CrossFit was very intimidating in the beginning so I would say give yourself grace, be open minded and listen to the advice of the coaches and members.Â
3. What are your nutrition goals for the next 6 months?
Something I do not do consistently and I really think could help is at least some meal prepping. I am trying to incorporate more veggies and I’ve noticed if I cut up cucumbers or peppers to have on hand I am more likely to grab them during the day instead of only having veggies at dinner.
4. How do you feel about burpees? Don’t hold back
I love to hate burpees. They are exhausting, they burn, and they never seem to get easier, but that’s exactly why I keep doing them. I know if they’re in the workout, I’m going to be challenged, and I’m going to leave feeling like I gave it everything. It’s a love-hate relationship, but deep down I know they make me better every time.
5. What are you reading or watching right now? Would you recommend it?
I really tried not getting sucked into this Love Island craze but I just started watching it and I’m hooked. I can’t say I’d recommend it though.Â
