Perseverence and patience are the words that come to mind for Andy. Many of our members know Andy as a consistent member, but don’t know how much effort that took. Just as he was getting started with us, he had a pretty serious injury at home that kept him away for a couple months. He was patient and then had a setback when he tried to return. This led to another month of rest and a considerable amount of frustration. For most, this would have been enough to give up, but here we are. Several months in and he’s feeling stronger, more energetic, and consistent as ever! Let’s get to know Andy even more!

1. Why did you start CrossFit?

I wanted to do more than just run and going to the gym gets boring after a few weeks. I asked a friend about CrossFit. He said he loved it and people who do CrossFit are nice and very supportive. He was right!

2. What advice would you give yourself before starting CrossFit?

Bring an open mind and positive attitude. There are a variety of moves- some will be easy and some that take practice. Nobody is good at everything. Give yourself permission to learn and a good 6 weeks to transition and see results. Spend an equal amount of time getting to know the other members—people are what make a place special.

3. What are your nutrition goals for the next 6 months?

Keep making small adjustments and better choices. Stick to real food (food without ingredient labels), plan ahead and keep portions reasonable. I come to class, feel great, and eat better. Pretty simple formula. Next 6 months I’ll do a better job on weekends.

Last 6 months I’m down 10 pounds, am stronger and breathing easier. That’s not just from getting in the gym. Nutrition is a big part.

4. How do you feel about burpees? Don’t hold back

Burpees are fine. When you start throwing burpees over-the-bar or burpee pull-ups at me I get angry.

5. What are you reading or watching right now? Would you recommend it?

Well…I just finished Quantum Computing for Everyone. It’s not for everyone. Like my CrossFit journey, I started a year ago, stopped, then picked it back up. Cool to consider how technology will change our lives in the next 20 years.

Streaming I’ve been watching Stick.  Good show about people overcoming their fears, learning to trust each other while on a road trip within a golfing context. In general, Apple TV+ has a good formula for delivering entertaining shows.
