It was a cold, dark February evening 3 1/2 years ago when I showed up for my 1st fundamentals class at Free Will Crossfit. I’m not going to lie, I walked through the door to a warehouse type setting and I was intimidated and petrified! I watched Crossfit videos prior to my class and was thinking, Wendy, what the heck are you doing here? What I did know was I needed a new direction, a different way of exercising, something I would stick to for longer than a month. In the past, I would sign up at big box gyms use machines I had no idea what I was doing or what it did for me, aerobics, fad diets, you name it, I did it. This only set me up for failure due to no supervision, no real direction, and no plan. After my first fundamentals class, I was intrigued. I wanted to learn more. It was then that I realized I was doing it all wrong for so long. After that night, and for the 3 1/2 years following, I knew that Crossfit was and is my type of workout. Constantly varying workouts that command my attention, challenges me daily, and the movements learned translate into my everyday life. I now have the supervision, a direction, and a plan.
I started at FreeWill Crossfit not being able to do 5 sit ups and now I am able to do 100 per day. I was never able to run 30 yards without being winded and can now run up to 4 miles at a time. I can do handstand push ups (well close to a full one). I started out using a 15 pound barbell with 20 pounds on it. Now I can squat, lift, and deadlift hundreds of pounds. I’ve lost over 35 pounds and counting. At age 51, my endurance, flexibility, and cardio limits are at a higher level than when I was in my 30’s. How is this possible? Crossfit was and will always be my answer. The workouts are not always easy but nothing worth anything is easy. I look forward to every, as I affectionately refer to them, anger management class! I work hard, sweat, boy do I sweat, and grunt a lot but I am getting the results and the coaching other big box gyms can’t deliver. I always leave exhausted but also with a real sense of accomplishment.
For anyone reading this, please understand that this is not your typical gym. There is no other workout program out there that does what we do at Free Will. This is why I love my workouts so much. Free Will puts a huge focus on not only quality and purposeful workouts, but also community and camaraderie. I love the smaller classes that allow the coaches to strive for more one on one instruction with me. I thrive in this type of setting. I’ve also met some pretty amazing people at this gym. Free Will members are my support group during the workout, they hold me accountable, they pick me up when I’m not 100%, and help me strive to be better. Free Will members come in all ages and fitness levels but we are all family and in it together.
I have so many goals that I would like to crush here at Free Will, to name a few, toes to bar (I’m super close), kipping handstand push ups, pull ups, the list goes on and on. With the help of the awesome coaches and my Crossfit family, I WILL get there! I may never be a size 2 or have a thigh gap but I will be healthy and strong. I am stronger both physically and mentally than I have ever been. I believe strong is beautiful!
One of the best decisions I have ever made, for my physical and mental health, on that cold February evening was to muster up the courage to walk through that warehouse door. I walked in a stranger and left as a member of an amazing Crossfit family.
Thanks Free Will!
