Get More Out of Your Warm Up

February 25, 2016

The warm up is the most underappreciated part of the workout. We’re all guilty of it. We get to the gym and we go through the motions of the warm up just so we can get to the good part: the WOD. When we do this, we miss out on critical practice reps and proper preparation for the workout. Everyone knows that when the muscles are cold, the chance of injury is increased. Cold muscles will also lack the mobility to move through their full range of motion, which decreases the strength of each muscle contraction. Imagine trying to kick a ball starting with your feet together without extending your leg behind you. 1. The ball is not going to move very far, and 2. You’re going to look ridiculous trying to kick like that. Not only is this necessary for increasing body temperature and stretching muscles, but is a great time to work on foundational skills. When the warm up is lazy, form in the strength or workout for the day will suffer. For example, if you struggle keeping your knees out during a squat and allow them to cave in while you’re warming up, you’re exacerbating the problem. Warming up our muscles correctly will allow more power and coordination through the rest of the workout and improve for min the long run. Get quality reps with light weight, so it comes more naturally with heavy weight.
