Over the years, we’ve started to describe ourselves as the gym for people who don’t like to workout. Soraya is as good of a posterchild for that as anyone. As you’ll read below, CrossFit was not something Soraya imagined herself enjoying. With a little convincing from a friend and a whole bunch of determination on her part, here we are celebrating her as member of the month! One of the things we love about Soraya is how open-minded she is. It doesn’t matter what it is; she’s willing to give it a shot. It’s that mentality that has led to this and will continue to bring her success in anything she does. Congratulations Soraya!! We couldn’t be more proud!

1. Why did you start CrossFit?

When I started CrossFit, I didn’t even know it was CrossFit, friends of mine described me what they did and I was a solid “NO WAY EVER”. I have always struggled with weight and in one of those “Let me do something” kicks, a friend recommended me a personal trainer who had a gym in his garage. Well, that thing (CrossFit) hit me like a thunderbolt. My endorphins filled every crevice in my brain. I felt like I was on crack and could not have enough of it. Eventually I learned that he was a CrossFit coach and I was
crossfitting. The first time he called me an athlete, I was dumbfounded and he had to explain to me, slowly and with small words why was he attaching such term to my persona.

2. What advice would you give yourself before starting CrossFit?

First, ignore what everyone is doing, just listen to your coach. You are building a better version of yourself, the others are not your frame of reference. Then: FORM FORM FORM FORM and FORM. If you lift a billion pounds with bad form you are just thriving to injure yourself.

3. What are your nutrition goals for the next 6 months?

I want to add more lean protein to my meals and break my intense and passionate relationship with sugar… maybe just be friends.

4. How do you feel about burpees? Don’t hold back

The Burpee is the fallen angel of the heaven of CrossFit.

5. What are you reading or watching right now? Would you recommend it?

I am reading The Angel’s Game- Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I would say is ok, the strength of this book to me is the main character: David Martin, who is terribly funny, in a sarcastic bratty way.
